      On Korea's Jeju Island, many of the island’s most respected divers are women in their 60s, 70s and even 80s.

They’re called the Haenyeo, meaning sea women, and they free-dive without oxygen tanks, plunging up to 10 metres deep to harvest abalone, sea urchins and octopus.

A few things that make them remarkable:
• They hold their breath for up to two minutes at a time
• Many started diving as teenagers and never stopped
• Diving is communal, with strong bonds and shared earnings
• Their culture is matriarchal, rare in Korea and deeply rooted in resilience
• UNESCO recognises the Haenyeo as an Intangible Cultural Heritage

This is not a performance for tourists. It’s real, hard, physical work shaped by generations of knowledge and respect for the ocean.
