Leatherback turtles are the largest living sea turtles on Earth — some weighing over 900 kg and measuring up to 2 metres long.
In Saint Lucia, they can be seen nesting on Grande Anse Beach, Sandy Beach in Vieux Fort, and other secluded stretches of sand. Their nesting season runs from March to August, peaking around April–July, when females come ashore at night to dig deep nests and lay up to 100 eggs.
What’s truly remarkable is their navigational instinct — leatherbacks return to the same beach where they were born, even after decades roaming the open ocean. Some migrate thousands of miles from feeding grounds as far away as Canada and West Africa.
They are endangered, so in Saint Lucia, conservation groups and volunteers monitor the beaches, protect nests, and guide eco-visitors to watch nesting without causing harm. Witnessing this under a starry Caribbean sky is one of the island’s most magical wildlife encounters.
